What was studied
In 2023, the Human Pangenome Reference Consortium published a reference combining genomes from 47 different individuals. It included 94 haplotype sequences, representing both inherited copies of the genome.
What was found
The approach aims to retain variants and structures that a single linear reference does not represent well. This creates a richer basis for comparing sequences and studying genetic differences.
What it does not prove
This was an initial version, not a final map of every population. Forty-seven individuals cannot capture all human diversity. A research benefit does not automatically mean a more accurate diagnosis for every patient.
Why it matters
Its importance goes beyond one disease: how we build references influences the questions we can ask of biology. The Journal presents it as a foundational achievement from 2023, not breaking news.
