In 2023, the Human Pangenome Reference Consortium published a reference combining genomes from 47 different individuals. It included 94 haplotype sequences, representing both inherited copies of the genome.

The approach aims to retain variants and structures that a single linear reference does not represent well. This creates a richer basis for comparing sequences and studying genetic differences.

What it does not prove

This was an initial version, not a final map of every population. Forty-seven individuals cannot capture all human diversity. A research benefit does not automatically mean a more accurate diagnosis for every patient.
