What was studied
Researchers recorded activity on the surface of the speech-related cortex in a participant with severe paralysis and an inability to articulate speech. Computer models turned the signals into synthesised speech during attempts to speak.
What was found
The system processed signals in 80-millisecond steps and personalised the voice using the participant’s voice before the injury. This describes decoding increments, not a guarantee that every sentence is produced without delay or errors.
What it does not prove
A demonstration in one participant cannot establish usability across different populations. Stability, safety and use beyond the research setting need evaluation. Some authors declare interests involving patents and companies.
Why it matters
The development matters for the autonomy of people who have lost speech. It is not general mind reading or an ordinary device available to everyone.
